Water-Creature Folklore around Freeport
Several kinds of supernatural water creature feature in lore discussed around Freeport.
The hand-tailed creature
One account describes a catlike or otterlike creature with an arm or hand at the end of its tail. It supposedly drags travellers beneath the water and is more commonly associated with freshwater than the open sea. Its name was not recorded.
Water-lily serpents
Other accounts describe serpents whose heads resemble water lilies. Their habits and abilities were not elaborated upon.
Slanchala
Slanchala are described as resembling mermaids with serpentine lower bodies. This description should not be confused with the transformed humans known as Merfolk.
Childlike spirits
Childlike water spirits also appear in the local lore, although their names and behaviour were not specified.
