Tonali

In the Southern Azcelani belief system, Tonalli is the supernatural force present in living beings, including deities.

Relative strength

Tonalli is understood to be strongest in gods, followed by humans, animals, and plants.

Consumption and sacrifice

Cuetzpalteōtl, the Hungry God, feeds upon Tonalli. Sacrifices and offerings direct his hunger towards particular victims rather than allowing it to consume everything indiscriminately.

Other gods also demand Tonalli from humanity so that they can offer it to the Hungry God in their own names.

After death

Those who have kept the Hungry God fed are believed to receive a delay before their own Tonalli is consumed. The greater their offerings, the longer this interval lasts.

During that interval, rituals can bind lingering Tonalli into Mutite, protecting it from being devoured.
