Cuetzpalteōtl
Cuetzpalteōtl, also called Cuetzpalmictēuctli or the Hungry God, is a primordial power in the Southern Azcelani belief system. He is regarded as more powerful than the other deities by a considerable margin.
Hunger
The Hungry God consumes Tonalli, the supernatural force within living beings. His hunger encompasses gods as well as mortals. Without continued offerings, he is believed eventually to consume everything. The consumption of a person’s Tonalli is described as both eternal torment and eternal nothingness.
Humanity’s obligations
Humans offer Tonalli directly to delay their own consumption after death. They must also supply the other gods, who pass offerings to Cuetzpalteōtl for their own protection. Gods deprived of sufficient offerings may bring disaster upon humanity to seize what they need. The faithful therefore understand sacrifice as both personal protection and a duty necessary to maintain the wider world.
Protection after death
The Hungry God is believed to delay consuming those who have sustained him. This interval allows surviving practitioners to bind the deceased’s Tonalli into Mutite before it is devoured.
