St Smithens’ Catacombs

St Smithens’ Catacombs lie beneath St. Smithen's Cathedral in Caelor's Garden, where the cathedral stands above an older Azcelani tunnel network.

Access

A hidden trapdoor beneath the cathedral’s altar provides access below.

The stone altar stands on rails, but moving it requires several people. The entrance is therefore concealed without relying on the altar being permanently fixed in place.

Purpose and contents

The catacombs are intended as a place of preservation for the Disciples of Smithens.

They also hold remaining treasure sent home by St Smithens and, according to the existing account, a surviving cryptic map connected with his last known location.

The map forms part of the search for St Smithens’ Chalice. Josephine Smithens died before she could fully explain its interpretation to her daughter.
