The Girl and the First Quetzalcoatl

The Girl and the First Quetzalcoatl is an East Azcelani legend explaining the distance between humanity and the celestial serpents, and the origin of Mutite.

The friendship

Before recorded history, a six-year-old girl encountered the first Quetzalcoatl to enter the human world. Drawn to her innocence, the serpent formed a close bond with her. For years, they remained inseparable.

The betrayal

As the girl grew older, she began using the serpent’s willingness to help for her own advantage. The Quetzalcoatl did not understand evil and failed to recognise her deception. It was tricked into committing terrible acts on her behalf.

Withdrawal and tears

When the serpent understood what had happened, it fled to the heavens and vowed to withdraw from human affairs. Its falling tears crystallised into the first deposits of Mutite.

The legend explains why Quetzalcoatl remain distant from humanity and are said to appear chiefly to the innocent.
