Atzalco
Atzalco, marked on Conquistadors (16P) charts as Puerto de la Garza (“Port of Herons”), is a coastal settlement approximately twelve miles west of Freeport. It has roughly five hundred inhabitants, most of them Azcelani, and is the closest neighbouring settlement to Freeport with a proper harbour.
The town occupies a sheltered inlet below steep green hills. Fishing boats, drying racks, and old timber homes share the waterfront with newer Conquistador administrative buildings. Its facilities include a customs post, a small garrison, warehouses, and a quay capable of provisioning smaller coastal vessels. Fishing and preserved fish exports support much of its economy, and it supplies Conquistadors (16P) expeditions travelling inland.
Once entirely under Azcelani control, Atzalco was occupied by the Conquistadors (16P) after Freeport fell out of their hands. The occupation maintains a nearby military and commercial foothold while denying Freeport a friendly neighbouring port.
Azcelani customs still govern much of everyday life, but a Conquistadors (16P) commandant controls customs and military matters. Locals resent requisitions, and some quietly trade with Freeport when circumstances permit.
In good conditions, a properly navigated coastal vessel can reach Atzalco from Freeport in approximately three to four hours.
