Vegas' Character

This is Vegas Simpson's character for Carrouban.

Vegas' Character is a Conquistadan-blooded Carrouban native in his mid-to-late thirties who has spent the overwhelming majority of his life at sea. He is, beyond any dispute, a sailor: seasoned, heat-hardened, and possessed of an almost preternatural sense for navigation and weather. He has worked the coasts and sea lanes of East Carrouban extensively, absorbing ports, peoples, and customs with ease, and carries himself comfortably across cultural boundaries. A facial scar and a habit of quiet superstition mark someone who has taken risks repeatedly and survived them - often by instinct rather than caution. He is a smooth talker and a natural organizer, at least in his own estimation, and he genuinely believes himself a born leader. That belief is not entirely baseless; at one point in his life, his story was true. He sailed under legitimate authority, commanded men, and lived by a code that at least resembled honor.

That legitimacy collapsed during the civil fractures following The Old King, Hedonist’s fall. Vegas' Character remained loyal in principle, reporting to a subordinate lord whose mid-battle defection poisoned the status of everyone beneath him. When the dust settled, suspicion lingered. Vegas' Character never formally reaffirmed his loyalty, whether out of pride, impulsiveness, or calculation, and his letter of marque quietly expired. Rather than abandon the identity it granted him, he clung to it - at first as a convenient fiction, later as a full delusion. He insists he is still a licensed privateer, and wants the world to believe it as badly as he does. In practice, he has embraced piracy for its freedom, disorder, and personal gain, using the trappings of authority as a fig leaf. His former crew and ship were lost to misfortune or division, leaving him solitary but undeterred. Armed, well-equipped, and convinced of his own narrative, Vegas' Character sails on as a fast-talking opportunist who confuses confidence for legitimacy and risk-taking for destiny, loyal only to the idea of himself and the sea that keeps proving him wrong - until it does not.
