Jolliver (Redd James' Crew)
Jolliver is a sailor in Redd James’ crew aboard The Red Scorn. His most distinctive feature is a pair of extremely small, close-set eyes. He smokes a pipe and passes time humming sea shanties.
Loyalty
Jolliver attributes his livelihood to Redd James. According to his account, Redd James rescued him from desperate childhood poverty when other people would not employ him because of his appearance.
His gratitude has become an intense personal loyalty. He takes entrusted duties seriously and declares that he would rather die than abandon his post or Redd James.
He can be sociable over a drink, particularly with people he believes have served Redd James well, but friendship does not readily persuade him to disregard his captain’s orders.
Duties
His work includes guarding the ship’s boat and ferrying crew between the shore and The Red Scorn.
Captivity aboard the Chained Hag
Jolliver was abducted during a confrontation at the docks involving members of Redd James’ crew. He was taken aboard the Chained Hag and tortured for information about his captain’s movements.
Under pressure, he disclosed details of Redd James’s departure from Freeport and plans to escape the blockade. This disclosure was coerced, not a voluntary change of allegiance.
At the end of the interrogation, Belladonna Velenza retained him as an unwilling prisoner. Suggestions that he might become a member of her crew had not become an established arrangement.
Family
During his interrogation aboard the Chained Hag, Jolliver said that he had a wife and children living in Conquistadan.
