Schools of the Dance of Crimson Feet

Dedicated schools train performers of the Dance of Crimson Feet among the West Azcelani (16P) and around Caelor's Garden.

Training

Training usually begins in childhood and develops balance, agility, lightness of movement, and endurance of pain. The schools are demanding and highly competitive. Students may be dismissed when their height or weight exceeds the requirements of the fragile glass stage. Most performers are women, although men also undertake the discipline.

Numbers and standing

Existing estimates place approximately 1,500 qualified glass dancers in West Carrouban, with another 5,000 students in training. Attrition is high. Accomplished dancers are respected and may enjoy considerable wealth or status. Performances at elite gatherings give them access to influential patrons and political society.

Rivalries

The schools have intense internal rivalries and participate in the region’s political manoeuvring. Stories circulate about extreme attempts to remain eligible to perform, including a dancer said to have amputated an arm to meet a weight limit. This is a story told within the schools, not a confirmed incident.
