Chichinteki

Chichinteki is a supernatural being associated with water and the creation of Merfolk. He is the brother of Apocaloketl.

Origin tradition

According to one account, Chichinteki and Apocaloketl originated as the wicked aspects discarded by the gods of water and fire.

These cast-off portions became independent beings. Because their divine nature prevented their destruction, the gods attempted to imprison them.

Chichinteki escaped into the sea. Apocaloketl could not follow him and was confined beneath the earth.

Merfolk

Chichinteki’s influence transforms living creatures into water-bound servants. The human forms known as Merfolk resemble drowned bodies and continually discharge water. Their creation involves the suppression or replacement of the victim’s consciousness.

Mutite

Mutite associated with Chichinteki shimmers like waves. In its presence, Merfolk are psychically connected to him and subject to his direction.

Some consume this Mutite, maintaining a connection and amplifying his presence. Severing that connection can cause psychic backlash.

His sister

Chichinteki is said sometimes to supply victims to Apocaloketl. Accounts of Merfolk being drawn towards fire or volcanoes are associated with this relationship.
